Customized Training is a workforce development strategy in which training programs are designed in partnership with an employer to meet the specific skill needs of a business or industry. Unlike traditional training models, customized training prepares individuals for clearly identified employment opportunities aligned with employer demand.

Customized training is often developed collaboratively among employers, training providers, and workforce or vocational rehabilitation (VR) programs. These partnerships help ensure that individuals gain the skills necessary to succeed in specific job roles while helping employers address workforce shortages.

How Customized Training Supports Vocational Rehabilitation

Customized training can support VR programs by:

  • Preparing individuals with disabilities for specific job opportunities
  • Aligning training with real workforce demand
  • Supporting career pathways in growing industries
  • Strengthening partnerships between VR programs, employers, and training providers
  • Expanding opportunities for competitive integrated employment

Examples of Customized Training

  • Employer-Based Training Programs: Training is developed with employers to prepare individuals for positions such as manufacturing technicians, healthcare support staff, and information technology roles.
  • Industry-Specific Training Partnerships: Training is developed in partnership with community colleges or workforce training providers to prepare individuals for jobs in industries such as healthcare, logistics, construction, or hospitality.
  • On-the-Job Training (OJT): Structured training is provided directly in the workplace, where individuals learn job skills while employed.
  • Apprenticeship or Pre-Apprenticeship Programs: Training programs are designed with industry partners to prepare individuals for skilled trades and other high-demand occupations.

When Customized Training May Be Appropriate

Customized training may be considered when:

  • Employers have specific workforce needs
  • Training programs need to be tailored to specific job requirements
  • A group of individuals can benefit from industry-focused training
  • Training is needed to support entry into high-demand occupations

Intensive Training and Technical Assistance

VR programs interested in expanding customized training strategies may access intensive training and technical assistance designed to strengthen employer partnerships, improve workforce alignment, and support practical implementation within VR programs.

Support may include:

  • Developing stronger employer partnerships and industry relationships
  • Identifying workforce demand using labor market information
  • Aligning training initiatives with local and regional workforce needs
  • Designing customized training strategies in collaboration with employers
  • Strengthening business engagement practices within VR programs
  • Improving coordination between VR staff, workforce partners, and employers
  • Supporting implementation of employer-driven training models
  • Integrating business engagement tools such as TCI (The Career Index) to support employer connection and opportunity mapping
  • Improving employer outreach, relationship management, and follow-up practices
  • Using workforce and employer data to guide training and placement strategies
  • Supporting VR staff capacity to engage employers as workforce partners
  • Identifying strategies to improve employment outcomes through employer collaboration
